Summer is the season of pitta

Summer is my favourite season of the year. The days are longer, the radiant warmth of the sun, the flowers are in full bloom and I can enjoy endless amounts of jovial time with my family in the water at the beach.

In the summer enjoy all that the season has to offer but notice how you react to the heat, to the energy created and generated by the season. Celebrate it, but make sure to also get enough rest and take time for self-nourishment and take care not overheat.

Spring has Sprung

Spring is a time of birth, and new growth. Energy stirs into action as we see new buds, new shoots, and fresh green leaves popping out everywhere. It’s a time when seeds are planted both literally and figuratively—seeds that will blossom into foods that will nourish and sustain us throughout the year and ideas, plans and intentions that will unfold into action as the year progresses.

Ayurveda yoga’s sister science and the world’s oldest surviving system of healing, parallels  these ideas and shows us that the key to feeling in step with the seasons is to harmonize with nature and to follow her lead.

Nature’s evolutionary, self-regulating, nourishing, harmonizing intelligence is conveyed to us through her foods. Each flavor of nature’s bounty expresses a different ray of this intelligence. There is Sweet giving us comfort, strength, fortitude. Salty gives protection, lubrication, stability, and helps us “taste” life. Sour gives courage, clarity and the power of digestion. Pungent gives enthusiasm, adds spice to life and increases metabolism, helping us convert elements and experiences into things useful, beneficial. Astringent helps us pull it together, focus, extract the essential from food and the essence from life. Ayurveda Immunity Spice Mix for the Winter

This Immunity Spice Mix is warming and purifying, with primarily the pungent, astringent and bitter tastes, considered so medicinal in Ayurveda. Try to have a teaspoon, as tea or cooked into your foods, every day. This is a great recipe that can be made up ahead of time and used through out the season to keep you and your family healthy and happy.  The spices can be sautéed with ghee or coconut oil before cooking in vegetables, rice, or grains to increase the benefits of the recipe.

Prepare this ayurveda remedy as soon as you notice signs of bad breath and a white coating on your child’s tongue. I also would note change in behavior such as irregular whining, moodiness and irritability are all signs that your child is run down and exposed to a ‘bug’.  This remedy is great for adults too.

Ayurveda stewed apples

Saucy Ayurveda Stewed Apples

Warm and nourishing. Great gut lube, cleansing support and a great way to start off your day or as a snack anytime. : )

2 apples
4-5 dried apricots (optional)
4 pitted and halved dates
2 c filtered water
1 tbsp maple syrup (optional)
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cardamon
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
dash of clove

*Option: you can add superfoods, nuts (soaked) and seeds.

Place in pot and cook till apples are tender. Puréed or enjoy as it is. Yum! I make a few combinations of this recipe with my own creative touch.  You […]
